CivicPlus best practices include code-based updates and content standards that reference the Web Content Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Levels A and AA, which encompass and surpass Section 508 standards.
Important Note
- CivicPlus has been at the cutting edge of accessibility for years and that will not change now. We were WCAG 2.0 compliant long before the United States Access Board (USAB) required it. Most of the new 2.1 improvements are focused on mobile, and that is where CivicEngage will focus its development. Currently, none of the WCAG 2.1 success criteria are required by law. We will continue to develop toward the highest available standards. As always, you can count on CivicPlus to continue to launch websites that are highly compliant with WCAG 2.0 A and AA.
WCAG 2.0 A & AA
WCAG is backed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the primary international web standards organization, and represents the future direction for web accessibility standards in the U.S.
WCAG 2.0 AAA
CivicPlus does not reference WCAG 2.0 AAA criteria, due to critical evaluation of the criteria for compliance and consideration of universally accepted best practices in the web community.
The AAA level of conformance severely limits the aesthetic appeal of a site and does not provide a meaningful, positive impact on accessibility. Our focus is to provide a high degree of compliance with WCAG 2.0 A and AA, which maximizes accessibility for all users while providing freedom to create a visually rich and appealing site.
Zero Errors
There are no error-free sites. It is a fluid measurement and different scan tools produce different results - there is a lot that’s open to interpretation. The most important thing you can do is to show an ongoing good-faith effort to keep your content compliant. To learn more about what you can do, please view our tools and resources.
