Whichever of the following options you choose to move forward with is completely up to you, depending on if you want control of the domain registration and Domain Name System (DNS) zone or not. Please keep in mind, when you transfer DNS control to CivicPlus, that there is no direct access to the DNS records. The primary DNS contact listed on the account will need to email DNS for any updates or modifications to the records during business hours (8 am to 5 pm Central Standard Time).
If you already have a domain name in mind that you would like to purchase, you can search for the domain on GoDaddy (the CivicPlus domain registrar) to ensure its availability and then let us know what it is and which method is most suitable to your needs.
Introduction
There are four ways to acquire a new domain name for your CivicPlus site:
- You purchase the domain name and you host the DNS zone.
- You register and pay the annual registration through the domain registrar of your choosing and host DNS, in which case the established DNS zone for the domain will simply be set up to point at the CivicPlus IP address.
- Note: You will need to provide CivicPlus Support with the new domain.
- You purchase the domain name and CivicPlus will host the DNS zone.
- You register and pay the annual registration through the domain registrar of your choosing and CivicPlus will establish a DNS zone for the domain on our server, in which case the nameservers on your domain registration will be set up to point at CivicPlus nameservers.
- This may require hosting fees, please contact your Customer Success Manager to discuss this option.
- Note: You will need to provide CivicPlus Support with the new domain name to set this up on the server.
- CivicPlus will purchase the domain and you maintain control of the DNS.
- CivicPlus will register and pay annual fees on your behalf and you will establish a DNS zone for the domain which will simply be set up to point at the CivicPlus IP address.
- Please contact your Customer Success Manager for this option.
- CivicPlus will purchase the domain and CivicPlus will control the DNS.
- CivicPlus will register and pay annual fees on your behalf and will establish a DNS zone for the domain on CivicPlus servers that will point the domain at the CivicPlus IP address.
- This may require hosting fees, please contact your Customer Success Manager to discuss this option.
Note: The only exception to this is the .gov or .us domains, given that all .gov/.us domains can only be registered and managed with dotgov.gov or the state to which it belongs.
